When I found a large public dataset of dating site users from OKCupid, it got me thinking. In the near future could we begin to predict relationships? Would the amount of data from social media and online dating change what we know about our ideal match? Until now, dating was an optimal stopping problem. The underlying math for how many people to date to increase your odds of finding the ‘one’ turns out to be 36.8% - before you should settle down and pick. Built on an OKCupid dataset anticipating the day when you’ll have a glimpse into a lifetime of relationships and can anticipate when some go bad and when the good ones will come your way. Each panel is 72” x 60” on stretched linen.
